There has been a spate of ideologically motivated murders and killings. Most of the victims, quite in line with an absolute lack media outrage, belong to Hindu groups. They are mostly associated with a variety of organizations that are collectively [and sometimes, wrongly] called the Sangh Parivar. They are also actively involved with the Bharatiya Janata Party. For instance, take a look at Kerala — where almost 250 people belonging to the RSS or associated with BJP have been murdered in the preceding few years . Or, Karnataka — where daylight murders of political opponents have received far less coverage than … [Read more...] about Do You Love a Good Riot?
I am listening to a debate over Tirumala Temple row as I type this. The tone of the debate is sickening. On one side is a TTD official and on the other side, is Ramana Deekshitulu (the force-retired chief priest of Tirumala Temple). The sort of aggression is unwarranted unless something is seriously amiss. Everyone ganged up against the Chief Priest and this reminds me of what KPS Gill said on the suicide of SSP AS Sandhu. All men are heroes in a time of peace. But those who are heading the self-righteous witch hunt against the officers and men of Punjab police today should ask themselves where they were … [Read more...] about Tirumala Temple Row – Need for Overhauling?
Two days ago, I was in Simhachalam. That was my second visit to the temple. Because it was a Saturday and Panchami, the rush was massive in the temple. We decided to have a Darshan through the 100 rupee Special Darshan. It was a very big mistake. It took almost half an hour for us to understand where the line starts. And when I entered the door which was suggested to me, there was a board there, on the wrong wall, but with no directions … [Read more...] about Simhachalam Temple – Need for Course Correction
When was the last time you enjoyed a dance without adding a political connotation to it? When was the last time you listened to a song without commenting on its language? When was the last time you went to a movie without checking the political leanings of the actor, the director, the producer or even that of the movie theatre owner? When was the last time you saw a Disney movie, and didn’t comment “subliminal liberal messaging”? When was the last time anything in life, existed without an underlying message or meaning? There was such a time, you know!! Question is, do you remember it? For men and women alike, do … [Read more...] about Thoughts on the Civilizational War
I was looking at the electoral numbers for today’s Karnataka Election Results. One of the biggest chest thumping by any party is, we scored these many votes even if we won lesser seats. Why does this happen? Two reasons – 1. Less seats won, but with massive margins. 2. More votes as a loser. The below table tries to make sense of that. BJP INC JDS As Winner Actual 22.50% 16.35% 8.69% 0% Margin 17.18% 12.95% 5.96% 2% Margin 17.51% 13.20% 6.08% 5% Margin 18.02% 13.53% 6.25% 10% Margin 18.79% 13.99% 6.52% As … [Read more...] about Two Interesting Datasets from Karnataka Elections
